Design #1 Online Form (Yahoo!)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For a company to gather information on their clients, they require the client to open an account with them. This process is being used in a lot of situation (getting a credit card, getting a mobile phone service etc). In most situations, a form is used.
Application of GIGO
• Yahoo! Addresses the GIGO problem by constraining the input of data visually and through drop down menu (Gender and location).
• As for information with specific format, Yahoo formatted the entry field to follow the format of the data (Birthday and limited numbers for day/year).
• To counter Problems of Quality, Yahoo! coded the form that validates the information before sending off the data to the server (Password confirmation by asking to type the password twice, postal code validation, validate day/year for Birthday)
Hierarchy of Needs
• Simple, easy and user friendly interface.
• There is no distraction on the page e.g. animated advertisement, additional links etc.
• Casual tone in their text. Makes it more appealing.

Design #2 Search Engine (Google)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A search engine is a very useful tool for research, shopping, entertainment and much more. But very often, there are a lot of unrelated search results returned to you when you search for something common.
Application of GIGO
• If there is spelling error in the search input, Google will suggest the correct spelling the search result page.
• By quoting a search, Google will be able to yield a much refined results. E.g. Searching for “pink ribbon foundation” will yield a much better results than just plain pink ribbon foundation.
• Another solution Google employed to avoid problems of quality is by adding a special URL parameter in Google search. For example, when searching for images of rose, by adding &imgtype=face at the end of the image search URL, you will be able to refine the search results to faces of people with the name rose.
Hierarchy of Needs
• Google search engine is very simple, without heavy load of advertisements or images on their pages.
• It is simple to use, but loaded with a lot of advanced features for people with different needs.
• Google have a lot of hidden features that helps refines the results returned to the user depending on their locale, language settings, preferences etc.

Design #3 Mechanical Pencil (Faber Castell TK-fine)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mechanical pencil requires lead with specific thickness for it to work. If a lead too thick for the pencil is inserted, the lead won’t be able to go through the pencil’s tip, rendering it useless.
Application of GIGO
• To prevent users from inserting leads of wrong size, Faber Castell imprinted ‘0.5’ on the body and at the end of the mechanical pencil.
• Faber Castell also designed the entrance of the lead chamber to only fit one lead at a time
• In cases when the correct size of lead was inserted, but the lead refuses to come out, Faber Castell fitted a pin in the design, to clear the tip of the pen in case of clogs.
Hierarchy of Needs
• The firm design of the body allows precise handling of the pen.
• Includes the basic necessities of drawing (pencil, eraser and cleaning pin)
• The lead and guide tube can be retracted. This means no more holes in pocket/bag.
• The color on the push button also indicates the thickness of the lead. Making it easier for people to identify the pencil and its lead.

Design #4 Disc Player (Sony Playstation 3)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here we are looking into the product Playstation 3 as a disc player. With so many different types of disc out there, it is hard to get one hardware that is able to read them all. Cds, Super Audio CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Playstation 3 is an example where the satisfaction of the user is guaranteed by allowing them to use any media inserted.
Application of GIGO
• Sony Playstion 3’s disc loading tray allows only the standard disc size. Thus dismissing media that it doesn’t support from being inserted into the machine.
• After being loaded into the machine, Playstation 3’s GUI allows user to confirm the content of the disc loaded.
• As another precaution to prevent users from inserting formats that it doesn’t support, imprinted on the side is the list of the format the system can read.
Hierarchy of Needs
• It can be considered an all in one home entertainment system because it supports the entire format available.
• It has a user friendly and responsive GUI called the XMB (Cross Media Bar).
• The processor of Playstation 3 (CELL) is capable of handling high level processing, thus making the machine very reliable.
• The Playstation 3 is capable of connecting to other people, sharing content, video downloads and much more through the internet.
